New Zealand Radiata Pine Lumber grades

Learn more
New Zealand radiata pine logs come in a wide range of qualities and can yield lumber grades to meet almost any requirement.

Arbor can also arrange to produce grades and sizes at your request and customise standard grades to meet specific needs.
We can also supply structural grades of lumber. Timber is graded, either for structural performance or for appearance. applications
There are two basic grading classifications:
  • Structural, for engineering applications such as beams and framing.
This can be done by visual stress grading, or by MSG (Machine Stress grading) , and acoustic stress grading

  •  Appearance by Visual inspection , for cladding, flooring, panelling, finishing, furniture and fittings.

    25mm, 32mm, 38-40mm, 50mm, 75mm, 100mm
For packaging applications other thicknesses are available. eg: 15mm/19mm/22mm components are manufactured to order

    50mm, 75mm, 100mm, 125mm, 150mm, 200mm
Widths by special request include 250mm, 300mm

  • Lengths:
    1.8 metres to 6.0 metres
Other lengths are available by special request.

Appearance Grades

Appearance grades or board grades are for finishing and furniture and can be either clear of knots or contain minor blemishes and tight knots.

No. 1 Clears
For jobs where clear, long lengths of timber are required such as mouldings and furniture.

No. 2 Clears

For jobs where one clear face and two clear edges are required.

Clear Finger Jointed
Used where timber is to be painted.
e.g. Sills, fascia, windows, or for selected use where a clear finish is required.

Dressing Grade
A tight knot grade used in furniture, panelling, and high quality exteriors.

Manufacturing Grades

Manufacturing or cutting grades for reprocessing to produce shorter clear lengths with excellent machining, and gluing properties.

These grades contain large knots and blemishes which are removed by cross-cutting and ripping.
The resulting clear components are often finger-jointed and edge-glued to produce mouldings and furniture.

No. 1A Cuttings Grade
Each piece yields one 1.8 metre clear cutting, with balance of cuttings averaging 1.0 metre.
Minimum of 70% recovery of clear cuttings.
Picture
No. 1 Cuttings Grade
Each piece shall yield 70% of its length in clear cuttings 1.0 metre and over.
Picture
No. 2 Cuttings Grade
Each piece yields 70% of its length in clear cuttings 0.600 metres and over.
Picture
No. 3 Cuttings Grade
Each piece yields 60% of its length in clear cuttings of 0.300 metres and over.

Merch Grade

Structural grades or framing grades are used primarily for construction where strength and stiffness are important. The main factor influencing a structural grade is the size and location of knots. Grades limit such defects to meet specified strength requirements.

Merch Grade
A general utility grade. Economically used for workshop and warehouse shelving, framing for upholstery furniture and fence palings.

Packaging-Industrial Grade

Industrial grades, used in packaging for various products such as pallets, cable drums, and concrete formwork. Grades contain a range of knot sizes compatible with the final use.
